CAMP MASTER CHEF, 5-7 JULY 2024

Cape Border District Cubs

On the 5th of July, 18 young Cubs from three different packs: 1st Cambridge, 1st Vincent and 2nd Gonubie joined together to fight for the title “Master Chef.”

Our camp started with Cubs choosing teams in the good old fashioned ‘Master Chef’ way. Each Cub had to pull out a colour apron from a black bag which would determine which team they would be joining.

Teams were: Coco-Nuts, Banana Splits and Grape Teasers

With teams being chosen, it was time to collect their utensils.

Each team was sent out on a treasure hunt. One team found all their utensils leaving two teams to buy or barter those not found.

At first neither team was prepared to part with their tokens to buy, nor were they willing to barter with their rival teams. However, as the challenges started, they soon became to realise the importance of the utensils they did not find and had to accept that they needed help.

Kitchens are wonderful to create culinary creations, but also a place where accidents happen.

Over the weekend, Cubs learnt many skills such as: how to follow a recipe, how to measure their ingredients, how to peel vegetables, and importantly, how to hold and cut safely with a sharp knife, among some others. Many skills which get overlooked in todays modern ‘fast food’ living.

While Cubs had to learn how to follow a recipe and cook their own food, they also needed to learn the different cooking methods. At camp they learnt how to start two different fires and how to safely use gas. ‘Grumpy Chef’ taught the Cubs how to lay a fire for cooking a potjie on the first night and the second night they were taught how to lay a fire to braai. On the Sunday morning, Cubs had to use gas to cook their own oats for breakfast. After a busy yet fulfilled weekend of mastering a new and helpful skill, there could only be one team who would earn the title ‘Master Chef’.

The team to earn this title was Team Coco-Nuts – Well done team!

Cub Instructors

As always, a successful camp could not be possible without our Cub leaders.

A big thank you to Akela Scotty from St Columba for traveling from Port Elizabeth to join our camp and for being our guest judge.

A big thank you to our four Cub Instructors: Zoe, Paige, Shayla and Troy, who were amazing with our Cubs, keeping them in high spirits by playing games and singing songs.

Finally, a big thank you to all our Cub adult leaders in the Cape Border District for giving up your weekend to help run this amazing camp. A camp which many memories were made for our Cubs to cherish forever.
