From 9th to 11th August, thirty-one senior scouts from 1st Cambridge Scouts Group, St. Columbaโs, 1st Walmer Scout Group, 1st Sunridge Scout Group, 2nd Gonubie Sea Scouts and Algoa Sea Scouts SA went on a thrilling trip to Makhanda (Grahamstown). The long weekend was characterized by team-building exercises, leadership training and networking opportunities.
For their part, the scouts immersed themselves in various training sessions such as programme planning techniques in scouting movement, patrol system in scouting movement, star awards / badges in scouting movement; camp permits in scouting movement; how to instruct others on knot-tying (knotsโ instruction) as well as Court of Honour (COH); Scout Advancement Program among other topics.
One of the weekend’s highlights was an obstacle course led by Basil Mills, where scouts tackled the “field gun pull.” Here, they marched with a trekking cart while towing a cannonโculminating in the thrilling moment when they fired the cannon they had worked so hard to move!
The weekend was not just about learning; it was also about making new friends and experiencing something unique. The bonds formed and lessons learned brought the region’s scouts closer together.
A big shoutout to organizers Stephen Stein, Simon Pienaar, Karl Whitlock, and Neil OโBrien, and a special thank you to Basil Mills for hosting the scouts on his farm and providing unforgettable team-building exercises. We also extend our gratitude to all the Scouters, parents, and especially the scouts for making this weekend one to remember!
