Message from Jonathan Pienaar, National Young Leaders Representative
Today, on World Book Day, we celebrate the magic of stories and the power of knowledge. Just as Scouting provides the opportunity to go on journeys and adventures, books give us the opportunity to explore new worlds. Books open doors — expanding our imagination and enriching our knowledge.
Books also help us grow as individuals and as leaders. They teach us to think critically, communicate clearly, and lead with empathy and understanding. The more we read, the more tools we gain to face the world with confidence and compassion.
I find nothing more relaxing than sitting in camp with a good book in hand, surrounded by the sounds of nature and fresh air. It is the perfect way to relax and recharge. Reading a book has definite health benefits because it reduces stress and improves sleep quality.
Today, wherever you are, I want to encourage all our Scouts to put down your phone or game controller and pick up a book that you find interesting or inspiring – even if it is just for 15 minutes. As an aviation enthusiast and history buff, at the moment I am enjoying reading Spitfire by John Nichol. There is a book out there for you!
Let’s continue to build a Movement which not only explores the outdoors, but also reads, reflects and leads with wisdom.
Happy reading and happy Scouting!
