Let’s champion “Tags, Tops & New Beginnings” this Mandela Day!

This Mandela Day, SCOUTS South Africa has partnered with” Breadtags for Wheelchairs” to encourage Scouts to recycle plastic tags & tops so we can contribute to giving someone a better quality of life by being mobile and independent with their own wheelchair.

Since 2006, “Breadtags for Wheelchairs South Africa’ has provided over 1000 wheelchairs to people all around the country, whilst recycling plastic and keeping it out of our landfills and oceans.

To donate a wheelchair we will need to collect:

  •  200kg of bread tags
  • OR
  • 450kg of plastic tops such as bottle tops from milk, juice or cooldrink bottles, or lids from yoghurt, margarine, …

These are then exchanged for funds by “Bread Tags for Wheelchairs”.

We are not asking every Group to collect this amount, but maybe collectively as SCOUTS South Africa nationwide we can change one or more lives!

What to do:

  • Collect your tags & tops at home, at church, at school, within your community or local centres.
  • The bread tags and plastic tops need to be collected separately as they go to different recycling companies. Black plastic bags or boxes (like paper reams boxes) are great to keep them in.
Look out for other materials or foreign objects as they might damage the grinding machinery at the plant where they are reused to manufacture seedling trays.
  • Bring your tags and tops to your Scout Hall during the Mandela Day celebration week.
  • Take a photo of your Group’s total collection and weigh your tags and tops separately.
  • Be sure to complete SSA’s national collection form to enter the SCOUTS South Africa Leaderboard & allow us to tally our national contribution! Once we know the total weight collected nationwide, we can follow up with “Breadtags for Wheelchairs” on who we will be helping!
  • Last step is to drop off your contributions at a collection point near you. You can find them on the “Bread tags for Wheelchair” website, but we will be sharing some options in the coming days!

Please encourage your Meerkats, Cubs, Scouts, Rovers, fellow Scouters, parents, and friends to spread the news and collect their tags and tops so we can truly be a friend to someone in need, whilst also cleaning up a little piece of our world #recycle #chamionsfornature.
